Gaby, that’s a good question. I talk, talk, talk to my kids. I try to model the behavior I want them to exhibit. I talk to my oldest daughter and make sure she knows it’s not okay to be treated poorly by anyone. I see how some of her friends throw themselves at boys and I’m thankful that Savannah has such confidence that she doesn’t feel the need to do that for attention. (I may work on perfecting that look too, however. You know, just in case.)

Figuring out when and in what situations to “cut the apron strings” is something I’m struggling with myself with my 9 and 11 year old boys. I guess you can only hope you’ve instilled enough common sense in them so they’ll try and do the right thing. Of course giving them a cell phone with GPS tracking works too!

Good insight! Now I don’t feel so terrible about the ‘baby steps’ I give my kids. I’m curious to know how you deal with teen and tween boys seeing as you have an older daughter as well. I’m at the point where I’m working on my evil, “you do anything to my daughter, I’ll hurt you real bad” look, but I’m afraid it’s not going to be enough, heh.

So Dawn… good on you for letting him go! Baby steps or not I’d like to recommend a book for you – Free Range Kids. It’s a good/fast read, and it is very enlightening! I read it, found I was already doing a lot of ‘free range’ things with my children…

OMG Dawn I remember the samething with my son, still to this day he is 15 now and I have to tell him plz go put some deodorant on. He says I did.. I say go put more hurry you smell!! Better yet take two showers and use alot of soap!! LOL I buy Axe deodorant and soap for him seems like the only thing that keeps him from stinking up the high heavens.. As for your daughter I dont want to think of the days that boys are interested in my daughters.. Bring out the big guns!!

Hilarious! My kids either have gone through that or are going through that, but I HATE that the boys want that crappy Axe stuff — that just smells DISGUSTING!!

Why do the stinky moments have to happen when in public? I think I would have yelled “Dude, you stink!” loud enough for everyone in smelling range to hear, just so they knew I didn’t approve of my son’s stench.

Great post! I am totally with you- children need to know that their feelings are valid but running is not always the best solution. Learning to make the best out of a situation is the key to success and will get your daughter far. Thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to more advice and tips from you experiences.
