Healthy Finances

When you or a loved one has a heart condition, you may worry about how you are going to manage financially. Concerns about the cost of medication, job security and future care requirements can become a source of stress.

Medical expenses

Private hospitals employ case workers who assist patients with the paper work. Your case worker will liaise between you, the hospital and your medical aid scheme to ensure that all procedures and medications are covered and to advise you or your family if any are not. It is important that you are aware of your rights to Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB’s). For more information visit the Board of Healthcare Funders web site.

Dread Disease Cover

If you have a heart attack or stroke which renders you unable to continue working, you may be eligible for a lump sum payment from your insurance company which will help to cover your costs while you are recovering.

Bond and Credit Card Payments

Keeping up with monthly payments can be a source of stress. Your insurance policies may cover your bond repayments if you are unable to pay due to illness. Similarly, some credit card companies have income protection insurance to assist you when you are unable to meet your financial commitments.

Debt Counselling

If you find that you are struggling to pay your bills, inform your bank or other creditors and make an arrangement.
You can also seek assistance from a registered debt counsellor who will advise you on how to manage debt.
Visit the National Credit Regulator website for further information.

A problem shared is a problem halved

If you feel concerned about your financial security, speak to your family and friends and get professional advice from a social worker or psychologist. Don’t suffer in silence as it will affect your recovery.
